Otoplasty (Ear Pinning Plastic Surgery)
If you have large or protruding ears, otoplasty may be an ideal solution for you. Prominent ears can be a source of embarrassment and impact your self-esteem and confidence. Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure used to pin back your ears and reduce their size for a natural, aesthetically pleasing look.
How Does Otoplasty Work?
Otoplasty is an outpatient cosmetic ear pinning procedure to correct large and protruding ears. The procedure takes approximately two to four hours using local or general anesthesia. Cartilage may be removed or reshaped to reposition the ear toward the head. Skin grafts can be taken from other areas of the body to restore the ear’s natural shape. You may be able to resume work within a week after the procedure.
Bruising and swelling are to be expected after the procedure. The recovery period can last a couple of months for full healing. During recovery, you will need to wear a compression bandage to hold the ears in place for three to five days. After that, you can expect to wear a headband day and night for a full month. You may need to wear the headband for another month only at nighttime.
Ideal Otoplasty Candidates
Otoplasty can be performed on anyone over the age of five years old. If you are a smoker, it is recommended that you quit a few months before the procedure. Smoking can interfere with the healing process and cause complications. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health.
