Eyelid Surgery

With age, eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess skin and fat can gather above and below your eyelids, which can cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under the eyes. Besides aging, severely sagging skin around the eyes can reduce side vision (peripheral vision), especially the upper and outer parts of the visual field. Eyelid Surgery can reduce or get rid of these vision problems. If you are considering eyelid surgery come and see Dr. Jeremy Nikfarjam and and Dr. Goulart at New You Plastic Surgery in Long Island or New York City. Both surgeons are board-certified plastic surgeons who understand the importance of safe, medical care. Find out how we can help make your eyes look younger and more alert.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid Surgery (a.k.a. Blepharoplasty) is a type of surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids. This can be performed on both the upper eyelid as well as the lower. Blepharoplasty is usually done in an outpatient setting. You will most likely be given drugs such as injections into the eyelids to numb them, as well as drugs through an IV to help you relax.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

The upper eyelid is the most common type of Blepharoplasty. Many patients choose this option to remove excess skin often appearing with age or genetics. This eyelid surgery can also improve your vision and make the eyelid feel less heavy.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The main reason patients choose lower eyelid surgery is to eliminate the look of bags under the eyes. This can come with age or genetics, but our surgery can remove the excess fatty tissue, improving and smoothing the skin around the area drastically.

What are the benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid Surgery in Long Island or NYC can especially be beneficial to address the following issues:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision.
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

The overall effect is to give your eyes a makeover that enables you to look younger and refreshed. There may be other areas of concern you can discuss with Dr. Nikfarjam and and Dr. Goulart if you are thinking about Eyelid Surgery.

Who are the best candidates for the Eyelid Surgery procedure?

Eyelid surgery in Long Island or NYC is a delicate procedure that may not be suitable for everyone. Typically, these are the following traits we look for when evaluating patients as good candidates for Blepharoplasty:

  • Healthy individuals with no medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Nonsmokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic goals
  • Individuals without serious eye conditions

Drooping eyelids or sagging skin can also be related to issues elsewhere on the face, such as the forehead, which Dr. Nikfarjam and Dr. Goulart will assess before giving you the green light. Every eyelid surgery patient is evaluated individually to assess whether they are a good candidate.

Eyelid Surgery first steps

The first step to getting Eyelid Surgery in Long Island or NYC is to book a consultation with Dr. Nikfarjam and Dr. Goulart. By scheduling a consultation, you will get to meet Dr. Jeremy Nikfarjam, learn more about what Eyelid Surgery involves, and decide whether this is the right procedure for you.

You will have the opportunity to discuss your goals, concerns, and expectations with Dr. Nikfarjam and Dr. Goulart, who will carefully evaluate your eye area and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs. During the consultation, it is important to openly communicate your desired outcomes and ask any questions you may have about our procedure.

Dr. Nikfarjam will provide you with detailed information about the surgical process, including the risks and benefits involved, as well as the expected recovery period. He will then personalize the treatment plan to address your specific concerns, and our patient coordinator can schedule your surgery at your convenience.

What to expect on the day of Eyelid Surgery surgery

Prior to the day of your surgery, you may be instructed to fast for a certain amount of time or avoid certain medications, to prep your body for the procedure. On the day of your appointment, while you are being prepped for surgery, Dr. Nikfarjam and Dr. Goulart will walk you through the procedure and techniques he will be using, as discussed in your consultation.

The first step in the surgery process is for Dr. Nikfarjam and Dr. Goulart to administer a type of anesthesia to minimize discomfort and pain. The second step is to make the incision on the upper and/or lower eyelids where Dr. Nikfarjam will focus his attention. The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed so the resultant scars will be well concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid region.

When working on the upper eyelid, Dr. Nikfarjam will make the incision in the natural crease of the lid to appear natural looking, and allow the best place to hide any scarring. The lower eyelid incision is usually made just below the eyelash line to appear natural. Once the incision is made, the fatty tissue will be removed.

The third step is to close the incision on the eyelids. Eyelid incisions typically are closed with sutures or skin glue. Sutures are removed within one week. Once the surgical component is complete, Dr. Nikfarjam and his team will move you into an area to rest and recover, before returning home. Because of the delicate nature of this surgery, you will require help getting to and from the clinic, as your vision will be impaired with bandages during recovery.

Our surgeons may also suggest the use of a laser or chemical peel to reduce discoloration of the lower eyelids.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

During the recovery period from eyelid surgery, it is very important to rest and avoid strenuous activities, especially looking at a screen for too long. Most patients are given gauze to cover the eyes after surgery, which allows for a better healing process and prevents any intrusion into the surgical area.

Bruising and swelling generally lessen slowly in about 10 to 14 days. Scars from the surgical cuts may take months to fade. Take care to protect your delicate eyelid skin from sun exposure.

Dr. Nikfarjam and his team will ensure you are given a detailed list of do’s and don’ts during your recovery period.

It is advisable to use a cool compress to gently press onto the eyes if you experience discomfort, you can also use over-the-counter medication to alleviate pain. You should wear sunglasses for any outdoor activities.
