Breast Reduction involves the removal of excess skin and tissue from the breast, followed by sculpting, reshaping and lifting the breasts to create a full, proportionate and perky breast size.. The first step to getting a breast reduction in Long Island or NYC is to schedule a consultation. During this session, Dr. Nikfarjam or Dr. Alexander Sun will explain what breast reduction involves. They will assess your desired outcomes and determine whether you are the right candidate for this procedure. Your consultation session is also your opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions you have. Upon completion of the assessment, the surgeons will be able to confirm the price for your surgery.
Prior to the day of your Breast Reduction, Dr. Nikfarjam and Dr. Sun may ask you to fast for a certain amount of time and avoid certain medications such as blood thinners, to prepare your body for surgery.
What to expect on the day of Breast Reduction surgery
On the day of your surgery in Long Island or New York City, Dr. Nikfarjam will walk you through the process so you know what to expect after being taken to the procedure room and prepped for surgery. The first step is to administer a type of anesthesia that will minimize pain and discomfort throughout the procedure.
Dr. Nikfarjam will then make the incision on the breasts. Depending on what was discussed during your consultation, and the plan marked out by Dr. Nikfarjam from your assessment, he will choose either an incision around the areola (often referred to as a lollipop incision) or a keyhole incision.
Next, Dr. Nikfarjam will remove the excess tissue and reposition the nipple and areola, which remain tethered to its original blood and nerve supply. If necessary the areola diameter is reduced by removing skin around the perimeter. Underlying breast tissue is reduced and the remaining breast tissue is lifted and shaped. With extremely large breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed completely and then repositioned to a higher position on the breast. In this case, the nipple and areola will not have a sensation after the operation and it will take longer to heal.
The final step in the breast reduction surgery is to close the incision. The incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives or surgical tape close the skin. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases, they will fade over time.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Following your surgery, you will be taken into a recovery room to allow time for the anesthesia to wear off, and prepare for your journey home. Gauze or bandages will be applied to your incisions, and an elastic bandage or support bra will minimize swelling and support the reconstructed breast. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. A pain pump may also be used to reduce the need for narcotics.
Dr. Nikfarjam will also advise you on the types of pain medication you will need throughout the recovery process. He will also give you detailed information on what to check on your bandages each day to ensure healing is on track.
It is recommended that you arrange transportation to and from the clinic so that you can avoid all strenuous activity during your recovery.
Your recovery timeline should look something like this:
- Week 1: You will need to monitor any pain, swelling, and/or bruising, and significantly limit your activity. You will be temporarily prescribed medication to help alleviate any pain.
- Weeks 2-3: You will start to feel much better and, depending on what your job requires, you should be able to return to work, however, you will need to still limit your exercise and activities.
- Weeks 4-5: You will need to continue wearing your support bra, but you will also be able to increase your physical activity at this time. You must continue to be gentle with your breasts.
- Week 6 and Beyond: You will continue performing your breast self-examination, and you should be sure to schedule routine mammograms. As your healing progresses, you can also discuss scar optimization and resumption of normal activity with Dr. Nikfarjam.
