What is Silicone Injection Removal?
Silicone Injection Removal is a surgical procedure in which biopolymers such as liquid silicone and associated dead tissue are removed from the body. Silicone biopolymers are free fluids that infiltrate the tissue and muscle of the injected areas. These tissues undergo a long term immune response that causes scarring, death of tissue and “granuloma” formation. Therefore, the affected parts of the body can be vast, requiring unique surgical expertise in order to excise the material safely while keeping an aesthetically pleasing outcome. What to Expect on the Day of Silicone Injection Removal Surgery
Prior to your surgery date, you will have had your pre-operative appointment (either in person or virtually) with Dr. Nikfarjam where he and his team will review your health history, medical clearance, and MRI report. You will discuss your goals with Dr. Nikfarjam and he will show you where he will carefully and strategically place your incisions. You will leave your pre-op visit with a packet of “dos and don’ts” and clear, easy to follow instructions to ensure a safe and seamless start to your surgical journey.
On the day of surgery, you will check in at one of our local nationally ranked hospitals- each with state of the art facilities, private and comfortable accommodations, and elite medical staff. Dr. Nikfarjam’s team of specialists, providers, and assistants will lead you from there! You will review your silicone injection removal procedure again in detail with Dr. Nikfarjam before you go to the OR.
This procedure is then performed in three stages
- Removal
- Lift
- Reconstruction
Each stage is pre-authorized through a patient’s insurance policy.
The procedure is performed in an in-patient hospital setting with several dedicated teams who specialize in this condition and are there to take care of you (immunology, pathology, physical therapy, nursing).
The first two stages are performed back to back over the same in-patient stay (approximately three days).
The reconstructive stage is performed approximately four weeks after the first two stages are completed.
