Myths and Facts About Liposuction

in New York

By Dr. Jeremy nikfarjam

Liposuction is a wonderful solution when diet and exercise do not work to remove fat from your abdomen, thighs, arms, or chin. This procedure has transformed millions of bodies over the years and provided stunning results. It is routinely one of the top plastic surgery procedures requested by both men and women. While it has been around for many decades, there are still some misconceptions about this popular procedure. Here are some myths and facts about liposuction that you should know.

Myth #1: Liposuction Is a Weight Loss Tool

Liposuction will remove up to a few pounds of fat from each targeted area, but it is not a weight-loss tool. The best candidates for lipo procedures are those with a normal BMI or weight but living with fat deposits that are difficult to lose. It is not recommended for those dealing with obesity or wanting to lose excessive weight.

Fact #1: Lipo Permanently Removes Fat Cells

After adolescence, the body stops making new fat cells. When liposuction removes fat cells, they will not regenerate. This means you can permanently reshape your body as long as you maintain your body weight.

Myth #2: You Will Not Gain Weight

Even though the fat cells are gone permanently from the targeted area, you can still gain fat in other areas. If you are consuming more calories than you burn, fat will be stored in the remaining fat cells.

Fact #2: Fat Removed From One Area Can Be Transferred to Another

One of the benefits of liposuction is that you can remove fat from areas you want to shrink and move it to an area that needs more volume. If you have extra tummy fat but want more fullness to your breasts, butt, lips, or cheeks, you can have a liposuction and fat transfer procedure performed at the same time.

Myth #3: You Will See Your Results Immediately

Liposuction surgery will remove fat from the desired area, but you will not see the results instantly. The fat may be gone, but there will be inflammation and swelling while the tissue heals. The targeted area will become smaller in the weeks and months after lipo as the swelling dissipates.

Fact #3: Lipo Will Not Help With Loose Skin or Stretch Marks

Liposuction will not change the skin if you have stretched skin or stretch marks from pregnancy or weight gain. It can remove fat from under the skin, but the skin may be even looser once the extra fat is gone. For those with loose skin or stretch marks, other procedures may be needed with lipo, such as a tummy tuck, neck lift, or thigh lift.
