What is a Breast Lift?

The actual name for a Breast Lift surgery is Mastopexy. Over time, some women will see their breasts sag, change, and lose perkiness which is a medical condition also referred to as breast ptosis, which can occur because of weight fluctuation, pregnancy, natural aging, and/or other inherited factors or something as simple as the effects of gravity. A breast lift can elevate and tighten the woman’s breasts up, lift the nipples, and giving the entire breast a more aesthetically pleasing youthful shape and firm appearance. The medical term for drooping breasts is “ptosis.”

For women who have minimal ptosis, we offer an internal lift, also called a dual plane mastopexy, which is performed by lifting a small amount of tissue off the chest wall. For those who have first or second-degree ptosis, we offer the donut breast lift. A patient whose nipple is below the inframammary line by one centimeter or more has third-degree ptosis. Third-degree ptosis patients have only one option available to them, which is standard or traditional breast lift surgery, also known as the anchor breast lift.

There are several different techniques for a breast lift with various incision patterns, which will be determined by the following factors:

  • Breast size and shape
  • The size and position of your areolas
  • The degree of breast sagging
  • Skin quality and elasticity as well as the amount of extra skin

Techniques Used for Breast Lifts

A Breast Lift can use a variety of surgical techniques when being performed, all of which can be discussed during your breast lift consultation. Below, we have provided you with a brief description of the incision techniques.

Also referred to as an “Inverted T”, an anchor lift requires the incision to encircle the areola, followed by a vertical line down the lower breast crease, and horizontally across your natural breast crease. This is typically used when more intensive lifting is required.

A Crescent Lift uses an arching incision that is made along the upper half of the areola. Next, the excess skin will be removed and if you are receiving breast augmentation, the implants will be inserted. If you are not getting implants, your breast mound will be reshaped and the incisions will be closed.

Also called a peri-areolar lift, a Donut Lift involves making a circular incision around the entire areola. It is also often used to reduce the size of the areola. A Donut Lift is a more extensive lift that is best for breasts that are mildly sagging, however, our breast lift surgeons are experienced and have the artistic eye that allows them to perform this surgery on women with significant sagging, tuberous breasts as well.

A Lollipop Lift only requires two incisions to reshape your breast. A vertical incision is made along your chest wall and goes around the areola, which gives this incision its playful name. It corrects moderate sagging and is a good option for women needing a slight lift.

Sometimes, a patient not only wants to improve their breasts’ perkiness but also increase their breast size; in this instance, Breast Augmentation is required. When performed, your plastic surgeon will usually make an incision at the breast fold and place the implant in a pocket directly under the tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall. If this is something that you are interested in, please discuss it with your provider during your initial consultation.

Textured breast implants have a surface that helps them adhere to the surrounding breast tissue, making them less likely to move around inside the breast pocket and giving them a more natural look and feel. Textured breast implants are not used too often anymore due to their higher risk of capsular contracture and association with BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma).

Breast Lift First steps

The first step to getting a Breast Lift in Long Island and Manhattan, NYC is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Nikfarjam or Dr. Goulart. During your consultation, we will carry out a comprehensive breast evaluation, analyzing your anatomy and discussing your desired aesthetic goals. He will discuss the various options and approaches with you, based on your build and wishes.

If you have lost a considerable amount of volume in your breasts, you may be advised to consider combining breast implants with your breast lift procedure. You will also be asked questions about your medical history, so you must be open and honest with your breast lift surgeon to avoid any unnecessary risks.

If you and Dr. Nikfarjam both feel that a breast lift is the best solution for your aesthetic needs, we’ll book the surgery immediately at a time convenient for you and provide you with pre and postoperative instructions.

What to expect on the day of Breast Lift surgery

On the day of your Breast Lift surgery at New You Plastic Surgery, Dr. Nikfarjam will place you under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure and may employ various surgical techniques to achieve the best possible breast lift results.

During this cosmetic procedure, excess skin and fat are removed from the breast, and the underlying breast tissue is re-shaped. The nipple and areola are moved to a more youthful, natural position, or resized if needed, and excess skin that was located above the nipple is moved down and reshaped to improve the contour, shape, and firmness of underlying tissue in the breast.

There are three different incision options, and these vary based on the amount of incision and lift needed. During your consultation, Dr. Nikfarjam will determine the incision that will provide the best results. The more common lifts and incisions include:

  • Anchor lift: Dr. Nikfarjam will place an incision that runs around the areola, go vertically down the lower breast tissue, and horizontally across the lower breast crease. This is typically used when more intensive lifting is required.
  • Donut breast lift: Also called a peri-areolar lift, it involves making a circular incision around the areola. It is also often used to reduce the size of the areola. While this technique is best for women with mild sagging, Dr. Nikfarjam’s aesthetic fellowship training allows him to perform this surgery on women with more extensive sagging as well.
  • Lollipop lift: During a lollipop lift, Dr. Nikfarjam makes the incision vertically along your chest wall. It corrects moderate sagging and is a good option for women needing a slight lift.

Breast Lift Recovery

When finished, you will be closely monitored in a recovery area and provided with detailed post-operative instructions for a smooth recovery. It is recommended to bring a family or friend to drive you home as you might have some lingering effects from the sedation.

You’ll be able to go home shortly after your surgery. You will be outfitted with a special surgical bra to help minimize swelling and provide additional support during your initial recovery. Similar to our breast augmentation post-op, we recommend you take it slow for a few days and arrange time off work to allow for healing.

Expect to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise, for up to six weeks post-surgery. Typically, our breast lift patients enjoy their enhanced breast shape and contour for many years afterward. However, your breasts and breast size will continue to change due to the natural aging process, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations.
