Adolescent & Teen Rhinoplasty
Appearance is incredibly important for teens and adolescents. Nose defects can invite ridicule among peers, causing emotional stress and impacting self-esteem. Adolescent and teen rhinoplasty repairs nose defects and restores confidence. It can help improve breathing and other nasal difficulties that may create serious health conditions.
How Teen Rhinoplasty Works
Teen rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure typically done in about three hours using twilight sedation. Incisions are made either inside the nostrils or under the tip of the nose. Bone and cartilage will be reshaped to improve function and aesthetics. Swelling and bruising are to be expected. Pain medications and ice packs can help reduce discomfort.
Your teen may resume school about two weeks after the procedure. Sports activities can be resumed two months after surgery. The nasal bones take at least six weeks to heal, which may make it difficult to wear glasses. You may want to make special adjustments for this through the use of contact lenses. If your teen finds breathing difficult, rhinoplasty may be required. Rhinoplasty may be combined with other facial cosmetic procedures to enhance your appearance.
Ideal Teen Rhinoplasty Candidates
Ideal teen rhinoplasty candidates are at least 15 years old for girls and 16 years old for boys. This allows enough time for growth plates in the nose to fully mature enough for the surgery. Your teen should be in good health with no underlying medical conditions that may impede healing. A consultation with a board certified surgeon will determine if rhinoplasty is ideal for your teen.
